My introduction to yoga came in 1980 as a 1-credit class in college to fulfill a Physical Education requirement. For the past 37 years since taking that class, yoga, in one form or another, has always been a part of my exercise/fitness menu, but never my primary activity.
As I aged, entering the "vata" stage of life, my body and mind changed, fluctuated, balanced and rebalanced and finally adapted to its new “normal,” I found a daily yoga practice satisfied more and more of my needs; helping to build muscle to begin strength training, increasing my flexibility and stamina for running longer distances and perhaps most importantly, helping to calm the anxiety, mood changes and depression that accompanies the physical changes of aging.
“My yoga” is a practice that has enabled me to strengthen and improve my aging physical body in a safe, enjoyable and fun way in order to continue to pursue the physical activities that I enjoy for as long as possible. It has also given me a unique mental and spiritual outlet to experience life in a changing mind/body connection.
My goal as a yoga teacher is to bring this practice to women (and men) who are actively fit, but seeking a less demanding power yoga/vinyasa practice, as well as to those “new to yoga” practitioners who are seeking a practice as a way to enhance their mid life exercise or fitness regime.
My Teaching Mantra:
I teach because I want students to find, as I did, that through yoga and meditation they can heal physically and mentally, know that they are good enough and strong enough and can feel accepted and respected regardless of their age, experience or physical limitations.
What’s Coming Up
New Class! Yoga for Stiffer Bodies
Mondays 7:15 - 8:15pm
We Are Yoga - 2645 Parley's Way
Let's face it, we started aging the day we were born and eventually, our bodies just don't respond like they "always have!" If you've ever labeled yourself as "too tight for yoga," you're a "weekend warrior" or you're recovering from an illness or injury, this class is for you! This 60-minute Hatha style class will focus on realigning your body from overuse and injuries through longer held postures with plenty of variations and use of props, like bolsters, blocks, blankets and straps. We will reset muscle length, improve body awareness and build core strength AND refocus the mind with pranayama exercises and meditation...and of course a nice restful savasana!
